The Art of War: Conflict and the African American Philosophy

(Portsmouth, NH)
From the first European contact to the formation of the United States, war has constantly shaped the nation's history. Key conflicts such as the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War defined America's territorial expansion and policy direction. As the U.S. nears the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, marginalized communities are raising concerns about these commemorations. While official celebrations aim to unify the nation and reflect on its history, BIPOC communities see truthful reckoning, particularly regarding the lasting impacts of colonization, enslavement, and systemic injustices. Drawing inspiration from Sun Tzu's The Art of War, which offers a holistic approach to victory in conflict and life, our 2025 EWH Tea Talk Series presents a unique framework. It explores how African philosophies of war, strategy, resilience, and collective action have influenced African American history. The series will also examine how African cosmology provided psychological resilience and survival strategies for those enduring oppression. The Winter Tea Talks are a series of participatory panel presentations and discussions related to New Hampshire's Black history and African American culture.

Losing Winter works by Lynn Cazabon

(Portsmouth, NH)
Losing Winter works by Lynn Cazabon February 7 - March 30, 2025 | Opening Reception / Meet the Artists: Friday, February 7 / 5-8pm -- Cazabon is presenting a unique and site-specific realization of Losing Winter, an ongoing participatory artwork and archive of memories and emotions about winter, revealing the personal and cultural ties we have to the season and reflecting upon what we are collectively losing due to climate change impacts on seasonal patterns. The project addresses the phenomenon of environmental amnesia, wherein with each new generation the changed or degraded state of the environment is perceived as normal, by preserving personal memories about the season as it was in the past in a particular location. The exhibition for 3S Artspace will include recorded memories about winter from Seacoast community residents, original artworks created by Portsmouth High School students, and historical and recent photographs, videos, and sounds of the season in Portsmouth and the Seacoast region.

Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike

(Littleton, NH)
Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike is Christopher Durang's wickedly funny play about family, regret, hope, and the choices we make in life. Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home in Bucks County, PA, where they bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. When their movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike, old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. One night out at a costume party with Snow White, an evil queen, and a few dwarves can steer everything into perspective. Throw in a sassy maid who can predict the future, and a lovely young aspiring actress and you have all of the ingredients for a hilarious night at the theatre. Winner of the 2013 Tony Award® for Best Play and of the 2013 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Play.

Our wonderful reproduction Shaker ladderback chairs, used for all of our events and meetings, need some tender loving care. Using one of our chairs and chair tape, we will teach you the art and mystery of chair seat weaving. Or you can bring tape—or purchase tape in our Gift Shop—to reweave your own chair, for a modest fee. All levels of chair seat weavers (total novice to experienced) are welcome. We have an abundance of chairs that need new seats! Refreshments served. All participants need to bring scissors and a hammer.
